Gym & Fitness Senior Discounts
Last updated 2026-07-15 · Offers change — when in doubt, call your local store and ask.
If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, there's a good chance a free gym membership is already sitting inside it unused - programs like SilverSneakers, Renew Active, and Silver&Fit are bundled into thousands of plans at no extra cost. If you don't have one of those, a handful of gyms and most city/county recreation departments still offer real age-based discounts. These benefits change every year when insurance plans renew, so always double-check before you show up.

| Where | Discount | Min. age | How to get it |
|---|---|---|---|
| SilverSneakers | Free gym membership (no monthly fee) | 65 | Included at no extra cost with many Medicare Advantage and some Medicare Supplement plans - not with Original Medicare alone. Gives access to 17,000+ participating locations (including many YMCAs and some Planet Fitness/Anytime Fitness/LA Fitness clubs) plus on-demand classes. Check eligibility at silversneakers.com/eligibility or call 1-888-423-4632; your plan can add or drop this benefit each year, so recheck at open enrollment. SilverSneakers (official) |
| Renew Active (UnitedHealthcare) | Free gym membership (no monthly fee) | 65 | Included with many UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plans. Gives access to 25,000+ participating gyms nationwide, plus on-demand workout videos, live streaming classes, and AARP Staying Sharp brain-health content. Find your confirmation code on the UnitedHealthcare member site or app and present it at a participating gym. Call 1-855-604-1588 (TTY 711) to confirm your plan includes it. UnitedHealthcare / Renew Active (official) |
| Silver&Fit | Free or low-cost gym membership | 65 | A fitness benefit offered through certain Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans (and some group retiree plans) - not a standalone program you can join without a qualifying health plan. Covers 20,900+ participating gyms and YMCAs (Standard network) plus a Premium network (rock climbing, rowing studios, etc.) at added cost. Search participating locations at SilverandFit.com or call 1-888-797-7806 (TTY 711) to confirm your plan includes it. Silver&Fit (official, via plan partner pages) |
| One Pass Select (Optum) | Discounted multi-tier fitness membership | 0 | Not free - this is a paid subscription network (not an insurance-bundled benefit like SilverSneakers) offered through some employer and Medicare plans. Tiers run roughly $34-$249/month plus a $29 enrollment fee depending on the gym network tier, covering 12,000-20,000+ locations. Some Medicare Advantage plans include a no-cost or discounted tier - check with your specific insurer, since pricing shown is the general commercial rate. Optum / One Pass Select (official) |
| AARP Active&Fit Direct | $28/month standard gym access (12,700+ gyms), 20-70% off premium studios | 18 | An AARP member benefit (so you need an active AARP membership, which itself has no minimum age but is marketed to 50+). No long-term contract - cancel or switch gyms anytime online. Provided by a third party, not AARP itself, so terms can change; note this is a paid discount program, not a free benefit like SilverSneakers. AARP (official) |
| YMCA | Discounted senior membership rate, often $0 with a qualifying Medicare Advantage benefit | 60 | Every YMCA sets its own senior rates locally - individual senior membership typically runs about $30-$60/month depending on the branch, with join fees often reduced or waived for seniors. Many branches also accept SilverSneakers, Renew Active, or Silver&Fit for $0-cost access. Contact your local Y directly for exact pricing; national YMCA does not publish one nationwide senior rate. | Planet Fitness | No official standalone senior discount, but widely accepts SilverSneakers | 65 | Planet Fitness does not publish a national age-based discount on its own Classic ($15/mo) or Black Card ($24.99/mo) memberships. However, many locations participate in SilverSneakers, so seniors with that benefit through their Medicare Advantage plan can often use Planet Fitness for $0. Call your local club to confirm participation before enrolling elsewhere. Planet Fitness member perks page + SilverSneakers gym locator (cross-checked) |
| National Park & Federal Recreation Lands Senior Pass | $20 annual pass or $80 lifetime pass covering entrance fees | 62 | Not a gym, but a genuine federal senior discount many overlook: covers entrance and standard day-use fees at national parks and other federal recreation sites (NPS, BLM, Forest Service, Fish & Wildlife, and more), plus 50% off some amenity fees like camping. As of Jan. 2026 it's also available as an instant digital pass through Recreation.gov. Buy at a federal recreation site or via the USGS store/Recreation.gov. National Park Service (official) |

| Cigna Healthy Rewards / Silver&Fit | Free Silver&Fit with most Medicare Advantage plans; ~$25/month Silver&Fit add-on for Medigap; up to 25% off gyms via Healthy Rewards | 65 | Cigna doesn't carry SilverSneakers - most of its Medicare Advantage HMO/PPO plans instead include Silver&Fit at no extra cost, while Cigna Medigap members can typically add Silver&Fit for a small monthly fee. Separately, Cigna's Healthy Rewards program (open to Cigna medical/dental customers generally, not senior-specific) offers up to 25% off gym memberships, but this is a discount, not a covered benefit - you still pay the discounted cost. Check via myCigna.com or 1-800-870-3470. Cigna (official broker/customer flyer) |

Tips
- Start with your insurance card, not the gym: call the number on the back of your Medicare Advantage or Medicare Supplement card and ask 'Does my plan include a fitness benefit like SilverSneakers, Renew Active, Silver&Fit, or One Pass?' before paying for any membership.
- SilverSneakers, Renew Active, and Silver&Fit are all benefits bundled INTO a health plan - you can't sign up for them directly. If a website asks you to pay to 'join,' you're likely on the wrong page.
- Gyms can add or drop these Medicare fitness benefits every plan year. If your gym was free last year, double-check during your plan's open enrollment (fall) rather than assuming it carried over.
- Big-box gyms (Planet Fitness, LA Fitness, Anytime Fitness, Crunch, 24 Hour Fitness) mostly don't have a fixed national senior discount - what varies is whether that specific location accepts SilverSneakers/Silver&Fit. Always call the local club directly.
- Don't overlook your city or county parks and recreation department - many offer free or steeply discounted senior memberships, classes, and pools that never show up in national 'gym discount' lists.
- Bring a photo ID every time - nearly every discount here requires proof of age at signup or check-in.
