Best Senior Discount Days of the Week
Last updated 2026-07-15
Senior discounts aren't gone — they've just moved to specific days. Grocery stores, retailers, and thrift shops still knock 5% to 25% off for shoppers over a certain age, but almost none of them advertise it loudly, and the day changes by chain and sometimes by individual store. Here's a real, sourced, day-by-day rundown so you know exactly when to shop. Because rules vary by location, always call ahead or ask at the register to confirm your local store still runs the discount, and bring an ID that shows your birth date.

Monday
Monday is a strong thrift-store day. Goodwill of Southwestern Pennsylvania gives shoppers 55 and older 25% off their entire purchase every Monday, no membership needed beyond showing ID at checkout. Harris Teeter also carves out Monday as part of its senior shopping window: 6–7 a.m. on Mondays and Thursdays is set aside as a quieter, senior-friendly shopping hour (separate from its Thursday discount, described below).
Food Bazaar, a grocery chain concentrated in the New York City area, runs its 10% senior discount Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., so Monday shoppers there are covered too.
Bottom line: if you're near a Goodwill Southwestern PA location, Monday is your day. Elsewhere, Monday discounts are thinner — check your local Goodwill and grocery chain directly, since day assignments vary store by store.

Tuesday
Tuesday is the single best-covered senior discount day in the country. Ross Dress for Less runs its "Every Tuesday Club": 10% off in-store purchases for shoppers 55 and older, every single Tuesday, no sign-up required — just tell the cashier and show ID if asked. Harris Teeter (in Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and Washington D.C.) gives VIC card holders 60 and older 5% off qualifying purchases every Tuesday.
Some chains only do Tuesday once a month rather than weekly. Fred Meyer gives shoppers 55+ an extra 10% off select items on the first Tuesday of every month, in-store or on pickup/delivery orders, for anyone with a free Fred Meyer Rewards card. Bealls Outlet has been reported offering 10% off on the first Tuesday of the month for customers 50 and up, though some Bealls Florida locations run a weekly 15% Tuesday discount instead — this one genuinely varies by banner and location, so confirm locally. Goodwill of Central and Northern Arizona also uses Tuesday, giving shoppers 55 and better 25% off every week.
If you can only remember one day to shop as a senior, Tuesday is it — just double check whether your local chain's Tuesday deal is weekly or monthly.

Wednesday
Wednesday is the other big day, led by Kohl's: shoppers 60 and older get 15% off in-store purchases every Wednesday, per Kohl's own FAQ page — bring ID, and note it can't be combined with other percent-off coupons and isn't valid online. Albertsons runs a 10% senior discount for many of its stores, most commonly on the first Wednesday of the month for shoppers 55 and up, though this is store-by-store rather than a single national rule.
Goodwill of Western & Northern Connecticut gives shoppers 60 and older 10% off their total purchase every Wednesday (excludes mattresses and new goods). Some Publix locations in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee have offered a 5% Wednesday discount for shoppers 60+ in the past, but Publix has confirmed this is a local, store-level decision, not a company-wide policy — call your specific store before counting on it.
Wednesday is a safe bet for Kohl's nationwide; everything else on this day needs a quick local call.

Thursday
Thursday belongs to two well-documented grocery chains. Hy-Vee gives shoppers 55 and older a 5% discount on Thursdays at participating stores (some Hy-Vee locations instead use a 3% Tuesday discount, so it varies by store — call ahead). It excludes pharmacy, lottery, tobacco, postal items, gift cards, and wine/spirits.
Harris Teeter also runs its Club 60 discount — 5% off for VIC cardholders 60 and older — on Thursdays in addition to Tuesdays, per its official program page, and pairs it with a 6–7 a.m. senior shopping hour on Thursday mornings.
Ace Hardware is reported by some sources to run a senior discount (roughly 10%, minimum age varying 55–65) on Wednesdays or Thursdays depending on the store, since Ace locations are independently owned — there's no single national policy, so this one is worth a phone call before you shop.

Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
Weekday-only senior discounts thin out heading into Friday and disappear almost entirely by the weekend — most retailers deliberately schedule the discount for a slower midweek day rather than their busiest days. Food Bazaar is the clearest exception: its 10% senior discount for shoppers with valid ID runs Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., so Friday shoppers there are still covered.
A handful of everyday (not day-specific) senior discounts also happen to work fine on weekends because they run all week: Michaels offers 10% off every day (not just one day) for Rewards members 55 and up, including sale items, so Friday or Saturday works just as well as any other day there.
If a specific day-of-week deal matters to your weekend plans, it's worth calling ahead — most chains that publish a discount day chose a weekday specifically to spread out senior traffic, so a genuine Friday, Saturday, or Sunday senior discount is the exception, not the rule.

Why the day (and the deal itself) keeps changing
Two things make this list a moving target. First, many senior discounts are decided store-by-store, not by corporate headquarters — Publix, Ace Hardware, and Goodwill are all confirmed examples where one location's Tuesday deal is another location's Wednesday deal, or no deal at all. Second, national chains have been quietly scaling these programs back for years: Kroger's original nationwide 5–10% senior discount phased out between 2017 and 2024, and today Kroger only runs occasional, one-off "Senior Discount Day" promotions region by region (Cincinnati-area stores ran one-day 5% promotions in April and May 2026, for example) rather than a standing weekly discount.
The safest habit: pick the two or three stores you actually shop at, call the customer service desk or check their official site once, and write down the day, age minimum, and any excluded items (pharmacy, alcohol, gift cards, and sale items are the most common exclusions across every chain in this guide). Re-verify every few months, since these programs change without much notice.
